Quinta do Noval Port wine, what's new...

 EN/PT

Quinta do Noval 2019 Vintage Port

    A non-classic vintage Port year, nevertheless the viticultural year was, in general, favorable to the vine cycle and grape maturation, although it was also unfavourable in many cases for the structure and body of wines - see the: the 2019 Douro harvest report - Quinta do Noval made the decision to produce and declare the two house classic and historic vintage Port wine brands, Quinta do Noval and Quinta do Noval Nacional. There have been consecutive years of vintage Port wine declarations at Quinta do Noval, to which the house defends that if the wines have the "Vintage" quality, then quite simply the wines are declared as Vintage Port, if they don't have "Vintage" quality, they are not declared, and this regardless of decisions and declarations of other producers, in a historic Port wine house where the priority is still Vintage port.

more here: Quinta do Noval Vintage Port wine chart

    This 2019 Vintage Port includes a selection of wines from 13 different Quinta do Noval vineyard parcels. It was vinified with the traditional techiques, foot treading the grapes in the granite "lagares" of the old winery, reserved to Port wine production.

    It's still a newborn, at the beginning of its long life. It has a dark, dense and heavy ruby color, for what the contribution of the Sousão grape variety was certainly decisive and which, in addition to color gave it the necessary acidity.

    It has a very good aromatic intensity, balsamic aromas, namely, notes of mint and eucalyptus, following the Quinta do Noval Vintage Port profile, which are aromas that also express freshness. The set of aromas includes fresh black fruit, black berries and blueberries, which are then repeated on the palate, with a spicy taste. A good complexity, balanced and harmonious, concentrated with excellent tannin structure and good acidity. It has a very long finish. If we had to choose one feature to define without a doubt it would be "elegance".

    Always produced in very limited quantities.

Quinta do Passadouro Porto Vintage 2019

    It is the first edition of the Quinta do Passadouro vintage Port of its recent "Quinta do Noval" cycle, which began precisely in 2019. The Quinta do Passadouro is located very close to Quinta do Noval, also on the left bank of the river Pinhão, in the valley where this river flows, just after and upstream the Vale de Mendiz village and further down the valley, in this area historically famous for the Port wines it produces.

    The grapes come from a field-blend of 30 traditional Douro grape varieties from the Quinta do Passadouro old vineyards. Here, too, the traditional winemaking processes are maintained.

    When compared to the prevoius Quinta do Noval Vintage Port of the same year, which is inevitable when tasted at the same time, the differences in style become more pronouced. It has a very dark and concentrated ruby color. Its aroma is warmer, more rustic, rougher, and at this initial stage, less exuberant and aromatically contained. Here the aromas are riper black fruit, black berries and ripe black plums, hints of cocoa and some smoky nuances. Complex, with a solid structure and lots of tannins, ripe tannins, with an intense and long finish. It will definitely accompany us for many years to come and it will be interesting to follow its evolution.

Quinta do Noval Colheita 2007 Tawny Port

    Another new feature this year in the Quinta do Noval portfolio. A 2007 single harvest Tawny Port bottled in 2021 (with 14 years ageing in wood casks).

    A Colheita Tawny Port wine, like a Vintage Port, is a wine produced from grapes originating from a single harvest or vintage, however, unlike Vintage Port that ages in bottle, the Colheita Tawny, then undergoes a specific ageing process in heavily used oak casks, in this casa with a capacity of 640 liters, for several years until finally bottled (the Port wine special categories regulation refers a minimum ageing period of seven years necessary for the approval of this category).

     At Quinta do Noval, the Colheita Tawny Ports are usually bottled with a minimum age of 13 years. The indispensable reference to the bottling date is on the bottle back label. This is the first bottling of the 2007 harvest, which was also a classic vintage Port year, the remaining stock will be kept in casks for later bottlings with longer ageing periods, in which it will gain more complexity.

    In the case under consideration, its oxidative evolution gave it a beautiful bright red color with orange streaks. It has an intense and rich bouquet, still with the presence of fresh fruit and then the dried fruits... It has freshness, despite the hot 2007 summer, with mild temperatures in August and hot days in September, balanced by cool nights which were favorable during the grape maturation stage. The wine preserved that element of freshness that is very present and which is one of its main characteristics. There are still some fresh fruit aromas present, and then the notes of evolution, dried fruits, figs, raisins and almonds and hints of spices, peppery, with a good acidity, complex and rich, in a tempting set with a long after taste. Very good and a reference in this special Port wine category.

    Other previous Quinta do Noval Colheita Tawny Ports to register: 2005, 2003, 2000, 1997 and 1995.

    Note: Port wine serving temperature is not indifferent, quite on the contrary, a correct temperature is fundamental for its correct perception and appreciation. For Vintage Ports, the reference temperature should be the so-called "cellar temperature", i.e., around 16 to 17ºC. The Colheita Tawny Ports should be served at a lower temperature, around 10 to 12ºC.

"Coravin" system in action.

Quinta do Noval 2019 Vintage Port

Quinta do Passadouro Porto Vintage 2019

Quinta do Noval Tawny Colheita 2007

Douro, the 2021 harvest, a first hand testimony

 EN/PT

The word to the producer himself...

Quinta do Noval: vine in the "Renova" vineyard.

    A lucid and updated testimony of the wine country, that highlights not only this year's harvest (many) difficulties, but also points out the main current and future problems of the Douro region, by Alexandre Antas Botelho, a traditional Douro wine producer (Noble & Murat).

    "The 2021 harvest was one of the most challenging vintages I've ever participated in.

    At the end of August, substantially different grape maturation levels could be found in the vineyards, from grape variety to grape variety. I happened to do maturation controls in old vines, in which next to grape bunches with 11,5 % alcohol potential content, there was another one with the grape bunches just coloring.

   In early September, with favorable weather, these imbalaces  came to attenuate, although grape potential alcohol content levels remained low.

    The truth is that, as the month of September advanced, the weather conditions proved unstable, with frequent rain and falling temperatures, which gerenally postponed the harvest date in order to obtain musts with the desired/convenient alcohol graduation levels for Port and D.O.C. Douro wine vinification.

    With the advance of September and the continued and frequent rain periods, the scenario of the appearence of rot in the grapes became more and more present, and by this time it was obvious that it might be better to guarantee the fruit in its existing state than loosing the bet on a latter harvest.

    In this way and as a conclusion, I retained the following points:

  • Relatively late harvest, taking into account the trend that has been registered in the last decade;
  • A lower alcohol content when compared to recent years, for musts made before and after the rain;
  • An excellent acidity of the musts harvested before the rain;
  • More difficulty in obtaining generous concentrated musts this year, as they require more extraction work and more grape spirit to raise the alcohol level (the grape spirit dissolves the must);
  • The accentuation of the labor crisis in the Douro. The need arose to pay more for the workday to be able to place the production in the wine cellars. It is essential to find mechanical harvesting solutions and seriously think about the sustainability of the Douro wine region. To what extent will this commercial and economic model be sustainable in the short/medium term (low prices and cheap wine / attempt to implement mass tourism / property speculation now also extending to the Douro villages / lack of employment and low wages). The Douro demarcated wine region is suffering from accelerated human desertification.".

    No início de Setembro, com tempo favorável, esses desequilíbrios vieram a atenuar-se, embora os graus alcoólicos prováveis se tenham mantido baixos.

    A verdade é que, com o avançar de Setembro, as condições meteorológicas se foram revelando instáveis, com chuva frequente e descida das temperaturas, o que foi adiando a data da vindima de maneira a conseguir obter mostos com a graduação desejada/conveniente para a vinificação tanto de vinho do Porto como de Douro D.O.C..
    Com o avançar de Setembro a a continuação dos períodos frequentes de chuva, um cenário de aparecimento de podridão tornou-se cada vez mais presente, sendo por esta altura óbvio de que poderia valer mais garantir a fruta no seu estado existente do que perder uma aposta numa vindima tardia.

    Desta forma e em jeito de conclusão, retive os seguintes pontos:
  • Vindima relativamente tardia, tendo em conta a tendência que se vem registando na última década;
  • Teor alcoólico mais baixo comparável com os anos recentes, para mostos feitos antes e depois da chuva;
  • Excelente acidez dos mostos colhidos antes da chuva;
  • Mais dificuldade em obter mostos generosos concentrados neste ano, visto requererem mais trabalho de extracção e mais aguardente para subir o grau alcoólico (a aguardente dissolve o mosto);

Douro 2021 harvest field work, 2nd act, at Quinta do Vallado

 At the beginning of the 3rd week of September (just before a few more days of rain in the midle of harvest season), from the top of the "vinha da Granja" (222m altitude) at quinta do Vallado, a parcel of old vineyard about 92 years old, on this date with the harvest just starting.

In the new and modern quinta do Vallado winecellar, the traditional winemaking techniques with foot treading in medium-sized granite lagares (mainly used for superior Port wine categories), coexist with the most modern technologies, such as carbonic maceration.

Douro 2021 harvest field work, at Quinta do Noval

 Rain appeared in all the Douro region on 7th September. Waiting for weather conditions to improve, it will take a few days to restart harvest works on the "Renova" vineyard at Quinta do Noval in the Pinhão river valley.

In the meantime, the vinification works continue as usual at the quinta old lagares house, exclusively for Port wines (here, the must fermenting in the lagar 5).

The 2021 harvest "Benefício"

 EN/PT

The amount of Port wine to be produced in 2021 was set at 104.000 casks, and this year without a qualitaty reserve.

   As it happens every year, it was approved by the Interprofessional Council of the IVDP (the Institute body that represents the production and commercial sectors and also the consummer interests that are represented by the IVDP President) on 30th July and announced by the IVDP through the Annual Harvest Annoucement for the Douro Region 2021, the production of fortified must for the Douro Region for the next 2021 harvest: 104.000 casks (of 550 liters).

    The "Benefício" definition and attribution criteria, here: The Annual "Beneficio" and Port wine

    Compared to 2020, this figure represents over 2.000 casks and an increased percentage in Port wine production of 2%. It is a quantity that, in any case, represents a slight recovery of the 5,5% drop in 2020 considering the pre-pandemic defined quantity in 2019.

    However, unlike the exceptional measure approved and applied in 2020 to face the economic crisis effects in the Port wine sector related to the Covid-19 pandemic, in which a qualitative reserve of 10.000 casks was created and financed by the IVDP (which is blocked for three years and then over the next decade will gradually enter the market).

    In 2021, an exceptional measure of the same kind was not approved, despite the proposal to establish a 5.000 casks qualitative reserve, that would only reach the market over a longer period of ten years, preventig the risk of imbalance and price drop due to a market oversupply. This year, the Ministry of Agriculture refused this measure and the financial support for a constitution of a new qualitative reserve, a decision that was based on data of the first half of 2021, that show an increase in exports and also on the portuguese market.

Wiese & Krohn, Sucrs., Lda.

EN/PT

 Short facts about the city of wine (3.)

Photo of the Wiese & Krohn Port wine cellar interior, at the Gaia Entreposto, on rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149, taken on November 2012, just a few months before its final closure, following the company acquisition by the Fladgate Partnership group.

    The long history of Port wine is inseparable from the geographical areas that wrote it and that help us better understand it. First, the city of Porto, which gives its name to the wine and which is historically the Port wine business and trade center, then, Vila Nova de Gaia, or the Gaia Entrepostro, across the river Douro from Porto, which corresponds approximately to its historic center area and is associated with Port wine storage, ageing and export, and finally, upstream the Douro river, the Demarcated Douro wine region, the area linked with the wine production.

    Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865, better known simply as "Krohn", as a small family business, founded by Theodore Wiese and Dankert Krohn, both of norwegian origin, they were originally dried cod traders, who, on the return trip to their country used their boats to transport Port wine, where it was sold, apparently successfully. In addition to selling Port wine in Norway, exports expanded to Scandinavian markets, Stockholm, Eindhoven, Copenhagen and Germany. Always with a great export vocation, later in the first years of the XX century, Port wine exports reached new markets, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

    In short, moving a little further in time, in 1910, the Port wine company becomes fully portuguese owned, when Edmundo Falcão Carneiro, at the time acquired all the shares of the other company partners.

    Wiese & Krohn has invested and specialized over the years becoming renowned for its collection of quality tawny Port wines aged in cask for many years, especially Colheita or Single Harvest tawny Port category.

     In 1912, Wiese & Krohn had its warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, where was located the great concentration of historic Port wine warehouses of the main exporters, on rua de Serpa Pinto n.º 9 and n.º 149. In 1933, a deposit house and office was located in Porto, on rua da Fábrica, n.º 45, 1st floor (here in a photo taken nowadays).

Left: rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149, Vila Nova de Gaia. Right: rua da Fábrica, n.º 45, Porto.

    In1989 it acquired Quinta do Retiro Novo in the Douro Cima Corgo sub-region, in Sarzedinho, in the river Torto valley, which also includes its winemaking center.

    The company owned six warehouses in the Gaia Entreposto, and the warehouse on rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149 where Port wines were aged since 1880 was also the company's visitor center. What was really special and the charm of this small traditional warehouse was that we entered in an environment of discretion and mistery that surrounded the cellar interior spaces, since it was intentionally kept as faithfully as possible since the end of the XIX century, with a sense of authenticity that allowed whoever entered to travel back in time, without any kind of sophistication that so characterizes other wine cellars nowadays but that also ruins hopelessly the authenticity and atmosphere of these unique spaces.

    At the entrance we could read: "Welcome to Wiese & Krohn. In this cellar we age Port wines since the 19th century. Inside you will find an important part of our rarities, carefully stored in ideal conditions, light and temperature. Experience the traditional atmosphere of an historic cellar and end your visit with a tasting of our wines.":

    It remained an independent family business until the third generation of the Falcão Carneiro family and until June 2013, the date Wiese & Krohn was acquired and became a part of the Fladgate Partnership group universe (which also includes the Port wine brands: Taylor's, Croft, Fonseca Guimaraens, Skeffington and Romariz), which now counts on its precious Colheita/Single Harvest tawny Port stocks, with some Port wine ageing in casks since 1863 and 1896. However, the wine cellars where Port wine has aged for so long, on rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149, in Vila Nova de Gaia, were not part of the Fladgate Partnership's plans and have been permanently deactivated and closed. The historic building lost its former usefullness after more than a century, and is at the mercy of the real estate interests that so quickly have been mischaracterizing and destroying this special place which is the Gaia historic center, which became poorer.

Wiese & Krohn, Sucrs., Lda

     After a year interval (in 2020 the Regatta was not held due to restrictive measures to combat covid-19 pandemic), this year the city of wine early summer calendar featured once again the 37th edition Rabelo Boat Regatta which, as usual, took place on Saint John's day, 24th June 2021. It is always a good oportunity to see this historic boats in action. (more on Rabelo boats and the Regatta here).

    This year the regatta had a total of 11 participants, however, Symington Family Estates vessels did not participate (Cockburn's "Quinta dos Canais, Graham's, Dow's and Warre "Cavadinha").

    In a sunny early afternoon, with very good weather, the race started at 14:00. Following a course that starts at the mouth of the river Douro, in the "Afurada" area in front of the Douro Marina and goes up the river to the finish line between the Porto riverside and the Sandeman Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Every year the starting time is marked according to the river tides, since the Regatta takes place during high tide to avoid navigation against the current of this heavy and difficult to maneuver vessels.

    The race started with very light wind which, however, luckily was progressively increasing in intensity even in the first phase of the race and throughout the course of the Regatta.

The final classification was:

1st: Fonseca "Panascal"

2nd: Dalva "Gran Cruz"

3rd: Offley

(4th: Barros Porto - 5th: Porto Cruz - 6th: Taylor's "Distinto" - 7th: Rozès - 8th: Calém - 9th: Sandeman "Vau" - 10th: Porto Ferreira - 11th: Kopke)

1.º: Fonseca "Panascal

2.º: Dalva "Gran Cruz"

3.º Offley

(4.º: Barros Porto - 5.º: Porto Cruz - 6.º: Taylor's "Distinto" - 7.º: Rozès - 8.º: Calém - 9.º: Sandeman "Vau" - 10.º: Porto Ferreira - 11.º: Kopke)
