The 2023 Vintage Port

The 2023 Vintage Port comprehensive list: brands, producers and technical information.

    This was a year in which few Port wine firms declared the production of vintage Port and the quantities produced were small, as a result of all the difficulties that characterised the wine-growing year; the weather was unfavourable (Douro, the 2023 general harvest report) and there were a number of extreme conditions, in general terms, grape ripening was uneven and hampered by erratic weather conditions, during harvest season there was great climatic instability following heavy rains that persisted intermittently for weeks.

    It was clearly an unusual year, characterized above all by the release of Single Quinta Vingtage Ports. Some of the major groups in the sector simply decided not to declare vintage Port this year, as was the case with Sogrape - which represents Offley, Porto Ferreira and Sandeman houses - the same happened with Granvinho - Dalva, Porto Cruz and Quinta de Ventozelo. The Kopke Group (formerly Sogevinus Fine Wines) also did not produce Vintage Port in 2023 under any of its brands – Calém, Barros, Burmester and Kopke.

    Of the largest groups in the Port wine sector, Symington Family Estates (Cockburn's, Dow's, Graham's, Quinta do Vesúvio and Warre's) declared the highest number of Single Quinta Vintage Port, originating from its six flagship estates in the Douro wine region, namely Quinta dos Canais, Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta Senhora da Ribeira, Quinta dos Malvedos, Quinta do Vesúvio and Quinta da Cavadinha. Limited editions were bottled, with the notable exception of Cockburn’s Quinta dos Canais Vintage Port, which is set aside for ageing in the company’s wine cellars for future release.

   For its part, the Fladgate Partnership (Croft, Fonseca Guimaraens, Quinta do Portal and Taylor's) only declared the Taylor's Sentinels Vintage Port, now in its second vintage following the inaugural release in 2022. A Vintage made exclusively from grapes grown on estates in the Pinhão  river valley (Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova and Eira Velha).

    Niepoort, another well-known producer, also decided not to produce vintage Port this year. 

   We note that the classic Quinta do Noval Vintage Port has been declared without interruption since 2011. The famous Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional was also declared in 2023.

    Despite the limited number of vintages declared, there were also some highlights to mention, the Van Zellers & Co. presenting a very limited edition (2,000 bottles) of the new Van Zellers & Co. Torrente Vintage Port. This vintage differs from the house’s classic Vintage Port; it is a particular interpretation of the year, paying homage to the Torto river valley, where the vineyards that give rise to this wine are located. Half of the production (1,000 bottles) will be left to age in the house’s wine cellar, to be released in ten years’ time.

    We also note the first bottling of Odisseia Vintage Port from Odisseia Wines, by producer and winemaker Jean-Hughes Gros.

    From this year we have recorded 32 vintages from 21 producers, as described below:

    Um ano em que poucas casas declararam a produção de Porto Vintage e, em geral, as quantidades engarrafadas foram reduzidas, como consequência de todas as dificuldades em que o ano viticola se traduziu, a natureza não foi favorável (Douro, o relatório geral da vindima 2023) e houve um conjunto de condições extremas, genericamente, as maturações foram irregulares e durante a época da vindima as condições foram de grande instabilidade climatérica, ocorreram chuvas intensas que se prolongaram a espaços durante semanas.

    Foi um ano não clássico, sobretudo de declarações de vintages de quinta ou Single Quinta Vintage Port. Alguns dos grandes grupos do sector, pura e simplesmente decidiram não declarar este ano, como foi o caso da Sogrape - que representa as marcas Offley, Porto Ferreira e Sandeman - e também da Granvinho – Dalva, Porto Cruz e Quinta de Ventozelo. Também a Kopke Group (ex-Sogevinus Fine Wines) não produziu Porto vintage em 2023 com nenhuma das suas marcas - Calém, Barros, Burmester e Kopke.

    Dos maiores grupos do sector do vinho do Porto, a Symington Family Estates foi o que declarou mais Single Quinta Vintage Port com origem nas suas seis emblemáticas e principais quintas durienses - a Quinta dos Canais, Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta Senhora da Ribeira, Quinta dos Malvedos, Quinat do Vesúvio e Quinta da Cavadinha - em edições limitadas e com a particularidade do Cockburn's Quinta dos Canais Vintage Port ficar reservado para envelhecimento nas caves da empresa para comercialização futura.

    Por sua vez, a Fladgate Partnership declarou unicamente o seu Taylor's Sentinels Vintage Port, em segunda edição depois da edição inaugural em 2022, um vintage feito exclisivamente com uvas das quintas do vale do Pinhão (Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova  e Eira Velha). 

     A Niepoort, outra conhecida firma, também optou por não produzir vintage neste ano.

    Registamos o clássico Quinta do Noval Vintage Port que desde 2011 tem sido declarado ininterruptamente. Foi também declarado em 2023, o famoso Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional.

    Apesar das reduzidas declarações e quantidades, houve também novidades a assinalar, como a Van Zelllers & Co., que apresentou uma edição muito limitada (2000 garrafas) do novo Van Zellers & Co. Torrente Vintage Port, uma declaração diferente do Vintage clássico da casa que é a interpretação particular do ano, homenagea o vale e o rio Torto, onde estão localizadas as vinhas que estão na origem deste vinho. Metade da produção (1000 garrafas) ficará a envelhecer na adega da casa, para ser lançada daqui a dez anos.

    Assinalamos também o primeiro engarrafamento do Odisseia Vintage Port da Odisseia wines do produtor e enólogo Jean-Hughes Gros.

    Este ano registamos 32 vintages de 21 produtores, como ficaram enuremados anteriormente.
