The 2021 harvest "Benefício"

 EN/PT

The amount of Port wine to be produced in 2021 was set at 104.000 casks, and this year without a qualitaty reserve.

As it happens every year, it was approved by the Interprofessional Council of the IVDP (the Institute body that represents the production and commercial sectors and also the consummer interests that are represented by the IVDP President) on 30th July and announced by the IVDP through the Annual Harvest Annoucement for the Douro Region 2021, the production of fortified must for the Douro Region for the next 2021 harvest: 104.000 casks (of 550 liters).

The "Benefício" definition and attribution criteria, here: The Annual "Beneficio" and Port wine

Compared to 2020, this figure represents over 2.000 casks and an increased percentage in Port wine production of 2%. It is a quantity that, in any case, represents a slight recovery of the 5,5% drop in 2020 considering the pre-pandemic defined quantity in 2019.

However, unlike the exceptional measure approved and applied in 2020 to face the economic crisis effects in the Port wine sector related to the Covid-19 pandemic, in which a qualitative reserve of 10.000 casks was created and financed by the IVDP (which is blocked for three years and then over the next decade will gradually enter the market).

In 2021, an exceptional measure of the same kind was not approved, despite the proposal to establish a 5.000 casks qualitative reserve, that would only reach the market over a longer period of ten years, preventig the risk of imbalance and price drop due to a market oversupply. This year, the Ministry of Agriculture refused this measure and the financial support for a constitution of a new qualitative reserve, a decision that was based on data of the first half of 2021, that show an increase in exports and also on the portuguese market.

Meanwhile in Porto, the exhibition: "Douro [DWR], three soils between heaven and earth" / "Douro [DWR] três solos entre céu e terra"

EN / PT

Skrei "Antrosolo", 2018: a collection of soils from the Douro, decanted in bottles / recolha de solos do Douro decantados em garrafa
Now in presentation in Porto, in the future City History Museum, the exhibition that recently returned from Bordeaux "La Cité du Vin" that invites visitors to "discover the historical richness and the singularity of the heritage" in the North of Portugal, and presents "an organic and anthropologically attentive insight into the landsacpe of Douro - a gathering of water, rock, scent and civilization".

The exhibition accompanying texts, welll worth reading:

"The Douro is the land of Port wine. These sun-drenched shale slopes, stretching form the foothills of Marão and Montemuro to the stony heights of Mazouco and the border valley of Águeda, produce the best wine in the world, the result of a stubborn struggle waged by the people of the Douro, pitting body and soul against the hostile forces of nature. They cleared the forest and the wild beasts from the mountains. They ground the shale to dust and carved out kilomoters and kilometers of terraces to fill with hanging gardens of grape. They endured the fury of a violent river, with deep channels, cascades, and rushing torrents, sweeping away houses and wineries, vineyards and vegetable gardens from its banks in its great floods. In summer, they shivered through the malarial fevers that sprang from the dry riverbed. In winter, they donned their straw hats and stood firmly in their vineyards through the hail and rain. And to create this wine, they left chestnut fields, flax beds, cornfields, vegetable gardens and orchards...".

Fernando de Sousa e Gaspar Martins Pereira.

"Douro is the name of a river, but its a name that extends beyond its banks to become the apellation given to an entire region. For approximately 100 kilometers - from Barca d'Alva, at the spanish border, all the way to Barqueiros, near Porto, where it flows out to the ocean - Douro is both a river and a land. Flowing down from Zamora to Barqueiros, the river does not impose upon the space through which it passes.
Here, the Douro, with its long course (nearly 900kms in length) becomes both the name given to a confluence of water, stones, plants, animals and people, and the cornerstone of that confluence, at both its beginning and its end.

Air, fire, earth and water achieve a balance here that is propicious to that highly prized plant life whose fermentation produces the exquisite and internationally renowned wine known as Port.

Many have attempted to reproduce this wine, with its complex manufacturing and aging process, in other lands, both in the country and abroad. Such attempts have met with no success.

Beyond the fortification process, and the aging in selected oak casks, stored in cellars along the southern banks of the Douro's mouth, the place where the vines grow is a crucial factor: soil, topography, climate. This is terroir made entirely by hand. These terraces did not always exist; the rocky crags had to be broken down, the schist rock of the monolithic cliffs that once rose from the most sunbacked riverbanks taken apart.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, nearly everywhere in the world, it is the production of natural and biodynamic wines that is now driving the wine experiences of the future. The idea is to give the wines made in a place its distinctive characteristics - the vines, the climate, the soil - applying techniques and containers that do not eclipse its distinctive forms, and instead allow th vines to grow and find their own way.
This means thinking about wine in a human way, as a living, permeable, changing thing, so that through the wine one can perceive the soil, the climate, the varietals, the year and even the bottle.

It is a different paradigm, one that emerges from an urgent need to rethink the world we inhabit; these are experiences of an intensified relationship between human beings and the soil.

This exhibition is thus and aminist (e)vocation of the region, one that conjures up the voices of the people, the songs of the birds, the metallic tonality of the shale, the rushing of the waters and the blowing of the wind.

First and foremost, it is a performative experience, one that can be seen as a composition; it is an exhibition that spans over time, one that articulates and brings together both ancient and contemporary sounds, testimonials, voices from the beyond and vision from the past projected into the present. In the bird's eye rendering, it constitutes a kind of landscape of sound.

In turn, the soil, the earth, the raw material aspects have been worked and brought to the table by Skrey architecture studio, located in Porto, and the wine maker and producer Mateus Nicolau de Almeida, who have developed a continuing and fruitful collaboration in the Douro region, in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, based around the creation of places where wine is held sacred. Together, they give us a panorama of this collective quest, this probing of the region's secrets, where, following in the auspicious tradition of the Cistercian monks, a dialogue is held between the knowledge of the past and experimentation.":

"O Douro é a terra do vinho do Porto.
