Wiese & Krohn, Sucrs., Lda.

EN/PT

Short facts about the city of wine (3.)

Photo of the Wiese & Krohn Port wine cellar interior, at the Gaia Entreposto, on rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149, taken on November 2012, just a few months before its final closure, following the company acquisition by the Fladgate Partnership group.

The long history of Port wine is inseparable from the geographical areas that wrote it and that help us better understand it. First, the city of Porto, which gives its name to the wine and which is historically the Port wine business and trade center, then, Vila Nova de Gaia, or the Gaia Entrepostro, across the river Douro from Porto, which corresponds approximately to its historic center area and is associated with Port wine storage, ageing and export, and finally, upstream the Douro river, the Demarcated Douro wine region, the area linked with the wine production.

Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865, better known simply as "Krohn", as a small family business, founded by Theodore Wiese and Dankert Krohn, both of norwegian origin, they were originally dried cod traders, who, on the return trip to their country used their boats to transport Port wine, where it was sold, apparently successfully. In addition to selling Port wine in Norway, exports expanded to Scandinavian markets, Stockholm, Eindhoven, Copenhagen and Germany. Always with a great export vocation, later in the first years of the XX century, Port wine exports reached new markets, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In short, moving a little further in time, in 1910, the Port wine company becomes fully portuguese owned, when Edmundo Falcão Carneiro, at the time acquired all the shares of the other company partners.

Wiese & Krohn has invested and specialized over the years becoming renowned for its collection of quality tawny Port wines aged in cask for many years, especially Colheita or Single Harvest tawny Port category.

In 1912, Wiese & Krohn had its warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, where was located the great concentration of historic Port wine warehouses of the main exporters, on rua de Serpa Pinto n.º 9 and n.º 149. In 1933, a deposit house and office was located in Porto, on rua da Fábrica, n.º 45, 1st floor (here in a photo taken nowadays).

Left: rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149, Vila Nova de Gaia. Right: rua da Fábrica, n.º 45, Porto.

In1989 it acquired Quinta do Retiro Novo in the Douro Cima Corgo sub-region, in Sarzedinho, in the river Torto valley, which also includes its winemaking center.

The company owned six warehouses in the Gaia Entreposto, and the warehouse on rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149 where Port wines were aged since 1880 was also the company's visitor center. What was really special and the charm of this small traditional warehouse was that we entered in an environment of discretion and mistery that surrounded the cellar interior spaces, since it was intentionally kept as faithfully as possible since the end of the XIX century, with a sense of authenticity that allowed whoever entered to travel back in time, without any kind of sophistication that so characterizes other wine cellars nowadays but that also ruins hopelessly the authenticity and atmosphere of these unique spaces.

At the entrance we could read: "Welcome to Wiese & Krohn. In this cellar we age Port wines since the 19th century. Inside you will find an important part of our rarities, carefully stored in ideal conditions, light and temperature. Experience the traditional atmosphere of an historic cellar and end your visit with a tasting of our wines.":

It remained an independent family business until the third generation of the Falcão Carneiro family and until June 2013, the date Wiese & Krohn was acquired and became a part of the Fladgate Partnership group universe (which also includes the Port wine brands: Taylor's, Croft, Fonseca Guimaraens, Skeffington and Romariz), which now counts on its precious Colheita/Single Harvest tawny Port stocks, with some Port wine ageing in casks since 1863 and 1896. However, the wine cellars where Port wine has aged for so long, on rua de Serpa Pinto, n.º 149, in Vila Nova de Gaia, were not part of the Fladgate Partnership's plans and have been permanently deactivated and closed. The historic building lost its former usefullness after more than a century, and is at the mercy of the real estate interests that so quickly have been mischaracterizing and destroying this special place which is the Gaia historic center, which became poorer.

Wiese & Krohn, Sucrs., Lda

Meanwhile in Porto, the exhibition: "Douro [DWR], three soils between heaven and earth" / "Douro [DWR] três solos entre céu e terra"

EN / PT

Skrei "Antrosolo", 2018: a collection of soils from the Douro, decanted in bottles / recolha de solos do Douro decantados em garrafa
Now in presentation in Porto, in the future City History Museum, the exhibition that recently returned from Bordeaux "La Cité du Vin" that invites visitors to "discover the historical richness and the singularity of the heritage" in the North of Portugal, and presents "an organic and anthropologically attentive insight into the landsacpe of Douro - a gathering of water, rock, scent and civilization".

The exhibition accompanying texts, welll worth reading:

"The Douro is the land of Port wine. These sun-drenched shale slopes, stretching form the foothills of Marão and Montemuro to the stony heights of Mazouco and the border valley of Águeda, produce the best wine in the world, the result of a stubborn struggle waged by the people of the Douro, pitting body and soul against the hostile forces of nature. They cleared the forest and the wild beasts from the mountains. They ground the shale to dust and carved out kilomoters and kilometers of terraces to fill with hanging gardens of grape. They endured the fury of a violent river, with deep channels, cascades, and rushing torrents, sweeping away houses and wineries, vineyards and vegetable gardens from its banks in its great floods. In summer, they shivered through the malarial fevers that sprang from the dry riverbed. In winter, they donned their straw hats and stood firmly in their vineyards through the hail and rain. And to create this wine, they left chestnut fields, flax beds, cornfields, vegetable gardens and orchards...".

Fernando de Sousa e Gaspar Martins Pereira.

"Douro is the name of a river, but its a name that extends beyond its banks to become the apellation given to an entire region. For approximately 100 kilometers - from Barca d'Alva, at the spanish border, all the way to Barqueiros, near Porto, where it flows out to the ocean - Douro is both a river and a land. Flowing down from Zamora to Barqueiros, the river does not impose upon the space through which it passes.
Here, the Douro, with its long course (nearly 900kms in length) becomes both the name given to a confluence of water, stones, plants, animals and people, and the cornerstone of that confluence, at both its beginning and its end.

Air, fire, earth and water achieve a balance here that is propicious to that highly prized plant life whose fermentation produces the exquisite and internationally renowned wine known as Port.

Many have attempted to reproduce this wine, with its complex manufacturing and aging process, in other lands, both in the country and abroad. Such attempts have met with no success.

Beyond the fortification process, and the aging in selected oak casks, stored in cellars along the southern banks of the Douro's mouth, the place where the vines grow is a crucial factor: soil, topography, climate. This is terroir made entirely by hand. These terraces did not always exist; the rocky crags had to be broken down, the schist rock of the monolithic cliffs that once rose from the most sunbacked riverbanks taken apart.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, nearly everywhere in the world, it is the production of natural and biodynamic wines that is now driving the wine experiences of the future. The idea is to give the wines made in a place its distinctive characteristics - the vines, the climate, the soil - applying techniques and containers that do not eclipse its distinctive forms, and instead allow th vines to grow and find their own way.
This means thinking about wine in a human way, as a living, permeable, changing thing, so that through the wine one can perceive the soil, the climate, the varietals, the year and even the bottle.

It is a different paradigm, one that emerges from an urgent need to rethink the world we inhabit; these are experiences of an intensified relationship between human beings and the soil.

This exhibition is thus and aminist (e)vocation of the region, one that conjures up the voices of the people, the songs of the birds, the metallic tonality of the shale, the rushing of the waters and the blowing of the wind.

First and foremost, it is a performative experience, one that can be seen as a composition; it is an exhibition that spans over time, one that articulates and brings together both ancient and contemporary sounds, testimonials, voices from the beyond and vision from the past projected into the present. In the bird's eye rendering, it constitutes a kind of landscape of sound.

In turn, the soil, the earth, the raw material aspects have been worked and brought to the table by Skrey architecture studio, located in Porto, and the wine maker and producer Mateus Nicolau de Almeida, who have developed a continuing and fruitful collaboration in the Douro region, in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, based around the creation of places where wine is held sacred. Together, they give us a panorama of this collective quest, this probing of the region's secrets, where, following in the auspicious tradition of the Cistercian monks, a dialogue is held between the knowledge of the past and experimentation.":

"O Douro é a terra do vinho do Porto.

The photography exhibition "Porto & Douro through the lens"

EN/PT

In the Gaia historical center, on rua do Choupelo, n.º 63, in the old Croft Port wine warehouses, until the end of October, it is possible to visit a photography exhibition of the first major photographers in Portugal, dating from 1845 to 1975. A precious and beautiful selection with historical images centered on the city of Oporto and the Douro region, highlighting the places and experiences, the diferent stages of Port wine production, in the douro and on the Gaia warehouses, some palces that still exist today as well as others who have not resisted the the action of man and the passage of time.

As part of this exhibition, a preview of the future of this site is also presented with the project called "World of Wine", sponsored by the Fladgate Partnership (which integrates the Taylor's, Fonseca, Croft and Wiese & Krohn Port wine brands), which will contribute decisivily to the wave of decharacterization and even desctruction of the physiognomy of the Gaia historic centre which has taken place in recent years.

Following the order and texts of the exhibition, the four great entities that once had headquarters in Oporto:

"Emílio Biel, photographer and mover of causes (1838-1915)
"Emílio Biel & Ca." was founded by Emílio Biel, who was born in Amberg, Bavaria, and died in Oporto. He was photographer of the Royal House, photographer of the ordinary people and also author of the famous collection "Art and Nature in Portugal", which was printed in photype, in 8 volumes, from 1902 to 1908, one of them dedicated to Oporto and a number of others to the Douro region.
He was the owner of a button shop and through that, representative of Coats & Clark. He was also representative of Benz and other firms, including Shuckert, a german firm that producec dymanos for electric power production. It was then that one of his major initiatives began: bringing public lighting to Vila Real by supplying the machines to "Companhia Eléctrica e Indústrial" for the production of energy. However, the start of the project was delayed by several setbacks. Hence, Biel decided to buy the cpompany and was therefore able to develop the whole project himself and bring street lighting to the city of Vila Real.
In addition to this achievement, Biel was also the driving force behind a number of other projects. He became a director of Águas do Gerês (Gerês Water Company), developed projects for the first street trams in Portugal, amassed a remarkable butterfly collection, which is currently in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Porto and considered one of the largest collections in the world. He was also a literary editor and published an edition of "Os Lusíadas", which is now considered a true rarity.
However it was photograpy that brought him to the public eye. In 1874, he bought the old Fritz shop on rua do Almada, which quickly became knowned as Casa Biel and initiated remarkable work in the world of Portuguese photography.
Biel showed the world a new side to photography: the possibility of reconciling the commercial concern with artistic and documentary values. In 1911, his company published a work called "The Douro" by Manuel Monteiro, which is profusely illustrated with his photographs and those of his contemporaries.

Frederick William Flower (1815-1889)
Frederick Flower was a pioneer of photography in Portugal. Born in Scotland of English parents, he arrived in Oporto in 1834, at the age of nineteen, to work in the Port wine trade. Most of his photographs were taken in Oporto, Vila Nova de Gaia and other cities in Northern Portugal between about 1849 and 1859, using the calotype method developed by the english scientist William Henry Fox-Talbot and patented in 1841. Unlike the first photographic technics, such as the daguerreotype, the Fox-Talbot method used paper negatives, called calotypes or talbotypes, which could be reproduced multiple times. Whereas photographic methods were most often used for portraiture and studio photography, the calotype became primarily a medium for architectural and landscape photography. In many cases, Frederick Flower's photographs represent the first images ever made of the places and buildings they depict and are remarkable, not only for their technical and artistic merit, but for their historical and archeological value. The collection of Frederick Flower's photographs, preserved over the years by his descendants, is currently stored at the Arquivo de Documentação Fotográfica of the National Office of Cultural Heritage.

House of Alvão and its founder Domingos Alvão (1869-1946)
"The Alvão Photography studio was founded by Domingos Alvão on 2nd January 1901in the city of Porto. Domingos Alvão and António Cardoso Azevedo were the two great masters photographers of the house.
Domingos do Espirito Santo Alvão was born in Porto and died in the same city. At a very young age he went to work for the House of Biel and in 1901 he took in the International exhibition of Leipzig. Following this, in 1907, he earned the Diploma of Merit in the World Competition of Artistic and Scientific Photography in Turin, Italy, The photographs Domingos Alvão sent to competition in Leipzig and Turin were part of a collection of aroun 700 images to which he devoted part of his time. These covered landscapes and regional costumes of the Minho and Douro Litoral and where staged to match the artistic style of pictorialism. He began to win many national and international prizes when he took part in shows in Porto, Lisbon and Panamá with the series "Artistic Landscapes and Portuguese Costumes". Alvão's photographs were often used to represent Portugal on the walls of the countries embassies.

Domingos Alvão and the House of Alvão won many national and international awards which led to commissions by various institutions to carry out photographic works on their behalf. This was the case in 1933, when the Port Wine Institute requested their services to create a general photographic survey of the demarcated region of the Douro Valley. covering all aspects of production, transporttation, bottling and export of Port wine.

The House of Alvão collection was aquired by the "Instituto Português do Património Cultural" (Portuguese Institute of Cultural Heritage) and currently, the Portuguese Centre of Photography has been carrying out the physical and documentary treatment of the photographs."

The Beleza Photographic Studio
"The Beleza Photographic Studio was founded by António Beleza in 1907.
Prior to this, Beleza had his own studio "Royal Foto", on rua do Almada 122, a traditional photographic studio area in the city. This was where the House of Fritz Photography was located, which Emílio Biel later bought. When Emílio Biel moved his studio to Palácio do Bolhão in 1888, António beleza took over the old studio in rua do Almada and, as was the custom, he took on other assets, including the plates, the machines and the decors. After Biel's death, he bought part of the collection which were sold i public auction.
The Beleza Photographic Studio at rua Santa Teresa attracted the bourgeois clientele and had an elegant waiting room decorated with portraits of Porto high society.
The Beleza Photographic Studio left behind a collection of several hundred thousand phtographic documents, one of the largest collectons known in Portugal, including more than 10,000 photographs of urban landscapes on glass plates. In addition, there are portraits of people from the North of Portugal, particularly of Oporto and the adjoining area.
In 2007 a full inventory of the Beleza Photographic collection was made by CEPESE and this is now available to view at espólio fotográfico português

A Fotografia Beleza

The XXXIII Rabelo Boats Regatta

The winner Rozès "Infanta Isabel"

The city of wine summer calendar begins with the Rabelo Boats Regatta, every year, on June 24th, the day of the patron Saint of the city of Porto, St. John. On this day you can see these iconic vessels, with centuries of history that are inseparable symbols of the Douro and the memory of Port wine, known to carry the Port wine casks through the Douro river from the “Alto Douro” wine region to the cellars warehouse at Oporto and Vila Nova de Gaia. These boats linkened the wine producing region to the warehouses and cellars at Gaia, that was the storage, ageing and export point. In their glory days came to be close to 3,000 (in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries). This fluvial activity ended in 1965, the year in which these boats made the last trip and the Rabelo definitely gave way (first to the railway) to the speed of transport by road.
However, a number of Port wine producing firms are committed to maintain and preserve these unique vessels and this annual race is a perfect opportunity to witness it.

This year was held the XXXIII annual edition of the race, organized by the Port Wine Brotherhood (Confraria do Vinho do Porto), whithin a distance of approximately 3.5 km., which ranges from Cabedelo, near the mouth of the Douro river to the finish line in front of the Sandeman House, close to Dom Luis I Bridge. This year participated 14 boats.
As a curiosity, it should be noted that the race time is set according to the tides, to prevent take place during ebb tide in which these heavy boats without keel and difficult to maneuver would have to navigate against the current.

Unlike usual, this year the race began in Afurada. It was an exciting and eventful race, the result of strong north wind and the unpredictability of the current, which made these boats even more difficult to master, from the start there was collision between vessels, torn sails, broken masts and boats thrown against the riverbanks.

This year the winner was the boat of Rozès with the insignia "Infanta Isabel", immediately followed by the boat Sandeman with the “Vau" insignia.
