The book
"Douro River People and Wine" by Antonio Barreto, officially
presented at the end of last year, at the IVDP in Oporto, is a revised, updated
and expanded edition of the previous
issues published in the nineties of the last century by "Inapa" publisher and sold out
long ago (photo below).
It is a must
book for any serious library dedicated to the Douro region and Port wine and is
a valuable and indispensable contribution to the understanding and knowledge of
the Douro region, its geography, landscape, the "Quintas", people, wine companies, social, cultural,
technological and oenological changes over the last 20 years, which are the
most extraordinary wine region in the world.
This edition,
available only in Portuguese, includes a set of 230 photographs, many
unpublished and others are the author´s
photos, who has been photographing the Douro almost for forty years and others
of his private collection of photographs of the region, taken by great photographers who visited the Douro from
mid-century. XIX.
The book presentation allows a reflection on the rapid alterations and major
changes in the Douro over the last 20 to 30 years (approximately since the last
edition of the book), we might call it the "new Douro" or "Douro
renewal movement "which we could help define briefly with the following
main features:
1. The
appearance of the wine DOC Douro table wine, with great success and with international
recognized quality wines. In fact, this type of wine is very recent in the history
of the region, it began to emerge over the last 20-30 years. Before there were
few Douro table wines, as exemplified by the iconic "Barca Velha" and
the Real Companhia Velha wines ("Evel", "Grandjó" and "Porca de Murça").
2. The emergence
of a new genaration of producers, with other values and other ambitions, with
more "world", as exemplified by the "Douro Boys" (Quinta do
Vallado, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta Vale D. Maria, Quinta Vale Meão, Niepoort)
Port wine and Douro DOC wine producers, which together internationally promote
their wines and renewed the interest in the Douro table wines.
3. There´s a
phenomenon of concentration of Port wine business in large groups (Symington
Family Estates, Sogrape, Sogevinus, Porto Cruz, Fladgate Partnership) with
the consequent gradual disappearance of the family companies, as well as a growing
foreign investment in the region.
4. In addition
and as a counterpoint to large groups we can point out the emergence of small
producers-bottlers, headquartered in the Douro who are commited in the production
of both types of wine, Porto (single quinta vintage Port wines, in the strict
sense of this wine style) and DOC Douro (some examples are; Wine & Soul - Pintas, Quinta do Passadouro,
Conceito wines, Duorum, Lavradores de Feitoria, Morgadio da Calçada, Rui Madeira
wines - Castelo D´Alba).

The inspiring
words of the author, Antonio Barreto, at the book presentation:
"Port
wine is certainly the single most important contribution of Portugal to the
history of humanity.".
"No
Portuguese product is as well known in the world, for so many decades,
centuries and I hope it does not change anything important, on the contrary,
maintain, develop, but keep the essential features. ".
"Half of
the book are photographs, 40 years of the author's photos and over 100 years of
heritage photographs. I think that is seen through the evolution of
photography, the work of the people, how people were organized in the vineyard,
and in the wine production, the very configuration of the terraces and vineyards,
I think you realize that the Douro is undergoing important and accelerated
changes. ".

O livro "Douro, Rio, Gente e
Vinho", de António Barreto, apresentado oficialmente no final do ano
passado, no IVDP, no Porto, é uma versão revista, actualizada e aumentada, das
edições publicadas nos anos noventa pela editora Inapa e esgotadas há muito
tempo (fotografia em baixo).
É um livro imprescindível em qualquer
biblioteca séria dedicada ao Douro e vinho do Porto e que constitui uma valiosa
e indispensável contribuição para a
compreensão e o conhecimento da região do Douro, da sua geografia, da paisagem,
das quintas, das pessoas, das empresas, das mudanças sociais, culturais,
tecnológicas e enológicas, dos últimos 20 anos e que constituem a mais
extraordinária região vinícola do mundo.
Esta edição, disponível apenas em
português, incluí um conjunto de 230 fotografias, muitas inéditas e outras do
próprio autor, que fotografa o Douro há quase quarenta anos e outras da sua
colecção particular de fotografias da região, de grandes fotógrafos que
passaram pelo Douro desde meados do séc. XIX.
A apresentação deste livro
permitiu uma reflexão sobre as rápidas alterações ocorridas e as grandes
mudanças nesta região nos últimos 20 a 30 anos (aproximadamente desde a última
edição do livro), a que poderíamos chamar o "novo Douro" ou "movimento
de renovação do Douro", que resumidamente poderíamos ajudar a definir com
as seguintes características principais:
1. O aparecimento do vinho DOC
Douro de mesa, com grande sucesso e com vinhos de qualidade reconhecidamente
internacional. De facto, este tipo de vinho é muito recente na história da
região, começaram a surgir desde há 20 - 30 anos. Antes existiam poucos vinhos
tranquilos, de que são exemplo o icónico "Barca Velha", os vinhos da
Real Companhia Velha (Evel, Grandjó e Porca de Murça).
2. O aparecimento de uma nova
geração de produtores, com outros valores e outras ambições, com mais
"mundo", de que é exemplo os "Douro Boys" (Quinta do
Vallado, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta Vale D. Maria, Quinta Vale Meão, Niepoort),
produtores de vinho do Porto e Douro DOC, que promovem internacionalmente em
conjunto os seus vinhos e que renovaram o interesse nos vinhos tranquilos do
Douro.
3. Para além de assistirmos a um
investimento estrangeiro crescente na região, há um fenómeno de concentração do
negócio do vinho do Porto em grandes grupos (Symington Family Estates, Sogrape,
Sogevinus, Porto Cruz, Fladegate Partnership) com o consequente progressivo
desaparecimento das empresas familiares.
4. Paralelamente e como
contraponto aos grandes grupos, assiste-se também ao aparecimento de pequenos
produtores engarrafadores, sediados no Douro e que se empenham na produção dos
dois tipos de vinho, do Porto (produtores de Porto vintage single quinta, no
rigoroso sentido deste estilo de vinho) e DOC Douro (alguns exemplos, Wine
& Soul, Quinta do Passadouro, Conceito Vinhos, Duorum, Lavradores de
Feitoria, Morgadio da Calçada, Rui Roboredo Madeira Vinhos).
5. Do lado dos pequenos
viticultores durienses, apontamos a constante quebra no valor das uvas, que são
a principal cultura.
Ainda as palavras inspiradoras do
autor, António Barreto, na apresentação do livro:
"O vinho do Porto é
certamente o mais importante contributo singular de Portugal para a história da
humanidade.
“Nenhum produto português é tão
conhecido no Mundo, durante tantas décadas, tantos séculos e espero que não
alterem nada importante no vinho do Porto, pelo contrário, mantenham,
desenvolvam, mas mantenham as características essências.".
"Metade do livro é
fotografia, 40 anos de fotografia do autor e mais de 100 anos de fotografias de
património. Penso que se vê através da evolução da fotografia, do trabalho das
pessoas, de como as pessoas estavam organizadas na vinha, da produção do vinho,
da própria configuração dos socalcos e dos vinhedos, acho que se percebe que o
Douro está em mudanças importantes e aceleradas.".
