The 2023 Douro harvest "Benefício"

 In 2023, the amount of Port wine to be produced was reduced and set at 104.000 casks (of 550 liters).

    According to the 2023 Annual Harvest Announcement for the Douro wine region issued by the IVDP - The Porto and Douro Wine Institute, last 14th July 2023, by decision of the Interprofessional Council (IC) of this entity (which is the governing body of the IVDP that represents production and commerce, this one with two specialized sections, Port and Douro, and also the representations of the public interest and consumers), the "Benefício" or the authorized Port wine production in the Douro wine region for this year's harvest was established at 104.000 casks (of 550 liters). It represents a quantitative cut of the benefício when compared to 2022 (116.000 barrels) of 12.000 casks or less 10,34%. This year the IC's decision was not unanimous since production representation abstained in the final decision.

    To substantiate the decision, several determining factors were taken into account, from the onset, without a doubt, the fact that there was a reduction of around 10% in sales of Port and DOC Douro wines in the period between January and May 2023, a drop in exports explained by the inflationary crisis in the main Port wine markets. Also taken into account were the existing stocks of Port wine companies, the history of quantities determined in previous years, economic expectations and interest rates. Another important element evaluated by the IC is the production forecast in the wine region for the next harvest, which according to the estimate released by ADVID (Association for the Development of Viticulture in the Douro Region) will be between 240.000 and 259.000 barrels, which represents an increase of about 10% in relation to the production of the 2022 harvest (which was 233.000 barrels).

    The IVDP also noted the need for "awareness and appreciation of the Douro Demarcated Region and its wines in favor of sustainability.".

O Benefício para a vindima 2023

Para a vindima de 2023, a quantidade de vinho do Porto a produzir foi reduzida e fixada em 104.000 pipas (de 550 litros)

    De acordo com o Comunicado Anual de Vindima para a Região do Douro 2023, emitido pelo IVDP - o Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, no passado dia 14 de Julho 2023, por decisão do Conselho Interprofissional (CI) desta entidade (que é o orgão do IVDP que representa a produção e o comércio, este com duas secções especializadas, Porto e Douro, depois a representação do interesse público, o Estado, e os consumidores), o Benefício, ou a produção autorizada de vinho do Porto na Região Demarcada do Douro para a vindima de 2023 foi estabelecida em 104.000 pipas (de 550 litros), que representa um corte quantitativo do benefício na vindima que se avizinha, relativamente a 2022 (116.000 pipas) de 12.000 pipas ou percentualmente, menos 10,34%. Este ano a decisão do CI não foi unânime, contou com a abstenção da representação da produção.

    Para esta decisão foram tomados em consideração diversos factores determinantes, desde logo, sem dúvida, o facto de se ter registado uma redução de cerca de 10% nas vendas de vinhos do Porto e DOC Douro no período entre Janeiro e Maio 2023, com explicação na quebra das exportações provocada pela crise inflacionista nos principais mercados de vinho do Porto. Foram também tomados em conta os stocks das empresas de vinho do Porto, o histórico das quantidades determinadas em anos anteriores, as expectativas económicas e as taxas de juro. Outro elemento importante avaliado pelo CI é a previsão da produção na região vinhateira para a próxima vindima que, de acordo com a estimativa divulgada pela ADVID (Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Viticultura Duriense), será entre as 240.000 e um máximo de 259.000 pipas, o que representa um aumento de cerca de 10% em relação à produção da vindima anterior (que foi de 233.000 pipas).

    O IVDP fez notar ainda, a necessidade da "consciencialização e valorização da Região Demarcada do Douro e dos seus vinhos em prol da sustentabilidade.".
