Blend them all!
A short reference on the theme single-varietal vs. blended wines, specifically in the Douro region, the voice of the renowned experience of 42 harvests by Cristiano van Zeller, currently responsible for "Van Zellers & Co." and a life linked to the region and the world of Port and DOC Douro wines:
"I do not produce single-varietal Douro wines, whatever they may be. In my opinion, in general terms, it would perhaps be easier to produce a wine from just one variety, white wine than a red.
Honestly, the Douro is all about blend - and we can make a much better wine with a blend. We ferment our grapes for white (D.O.C.) VZ wine, rabigato, códega do larinho, viosinho, gouveio, arinto, we ferment each grape variety, and then make the blend, but in the old vines we ferment everything together. I´ve tried for many years not no blend wines (I have 42 harvests and at least 25 in white wines) and the blend is always the best, always the best, always the best. That´s why we don´t produce wines from just one grape variety. We go for mixed vineyards preferably, vineyards with mixed varieties and in the case where they don´t exist, then the best thing is to blend them all.
I really like mixtures. I´am a fan of what traditional Douro vineyards are, whith grape varieties all mixed together, I don´t like prediction at all in this aspect, I like surprise in wine and in the Douro, in what I do, I like being surprised every year with what the vineyards give us and if they are all single varieties it is all very predictable for me, I enjoy the permanent challenge and being surprised.".

Uma curta referência sobre o tema, vinhos monocasta vs. vinhos de lote, especificamente na região do Douro, a voz da reconhecida experiência de 42 vindimas de Cristiano van Zeller, actualmente responsável pela "Van Zellers & Co." e uma vida ligada à região e ao mundo dos vinhos do Porto e D.O.C. Douro:
"Não produzo vinhos do Douro monocasta, quaisquer que sejam. Na minha opinião, em termos gerais, talvez fosse mais fácil produzir um vinho de uma variedade só, mais num vinho branco do que num tinto.
Honestamente, o Douro tem tudo a vêr com o lote - e podemos fazer um vinho muito melhor com um lote. Nós fermentamos as nossas uvas para vinho VZ branco, rabigato, códega do larinho, viosinho, gouveio e arinto, fermentamos cada variedade e depois fazemos o lote, mas nas vinhas velhas fermentamos tudo junto. Já tentei durante muitos anos não lotar os vinhos (tenho 42 vindimas e nos vinhos brancos, pelo menos 25) e o blend é sempre o melhor, sempre o melhor, sempre o melhor, por isso não produzimos vinhos de uma só casta. Vamos para as mixed vineyards preferencialmente, vinhas com variedades misturadas e nos casos em que não existem então o melhor é "blend them all".
Eu gosto muito das misturas, sou um fanático daquilo que são as vinha do Douro tradicionais, com as castas todas misturadas, não gosto nada da previsão neste aspecto, eu gosto da surpresa, no vinho e no Douro, naquilo que faço, gosto de ser surpreendido com o que as vinhas nos dão, e se são tudo monocastas, é muito previsível para mim, acho piada à surpresa e ao desafio permanente."
