Completed the 2020 Douro harvest, which this year was much shorter, after finishing the last "lagar" and with all the winery work ahead, we publish a testimony of the traditional Douro, by Alexandre Antas Botelho, responsible for the Noble & Murat Port wine house, a traditionalist producer based on the Pinhão river valley, from his personal experience, a good summary of the wine year that just ended in the Douro wine region.
"The year 2020 will leave a memory for the challenges it posed and continues to pose to Douro wine growers and to the sector in general.
To begin with, it brought a rainy winter that allowed the recovery of the insufficient water reserves of the vines, after a succession of five very dry years.
Then it was a very laborious year in the vineyards, the winegrowers being forced to many antifungal treatments and several "passages" in the vineyards to prevent the production from being severely affected. This aspect brought a lot of concern to the Douro region, since this was a very expensive year for winegrowers, and in spring, it was said that grape prices would go down a lot due to the trade good stock levels and the sales reduction due to covid-19. It was said that the trade would buy the grapes almost as a favor to producers.
In the end, with the harvest arrival, the worst scenarios have not been proven. The weak nascence ended up balancing supply and demand, and in the end, the trade did not reduce purchases as expected in the worst initial scenario.
Regarding the grape quality and the musts produced, in the case of Noble & Murat, the old vines shone this year. The reduction in production brought to the "lagares" very concentrated musts, with an intense colour and with a very high ration between grape skins, stems and pulp. The baumés (the sugar content) of the musts were high due to slightly grape dryness that occured in the first half o september but, in our case, without a great pH sacrifice.
In general, we look forward to the evolution of these wines in coming years, and our objective of having a range of wine masses of higher level to maintain the consistency of our LBV's seems to have been achieved.".
Douro, a vindima de 2020: um testemunho
Concluída a curta vindima de 2020, depois de terminado o último lagar e iniciados os trabalhos na adega, publicamos um testemunho do Douro tradicional, de Alexandre Antas Botelho, responsável pelos vinhos do Porto de categorias especiais da Nobel & Murat, um produtor tradicionalista do vale do Pinhão, da sua experiência pessoal um bom resumo do ano vitícola que acaba de terminar na região duriense.
"O ano de 2020 vai deixar memória pelos desafios que colocou e continua a colocar aos viticultores do Douro e ao sector em geral.
Para começar trouxe um inverno chuvoso que recuperou as insuficientes reservas das videiras, depois de uma sucessão de cinco anos muito secos.
Depois foi um ano muito trabalhoso nas vinhas com os viticultores a serem obrigado a fazer muitas passagens de antifúngicos na vinha para evitar que a produção fosse muito afectada. Este aspecto trouxe muita preocupação no Douro, uma vez que este foi um ano bastante caro para os viticultores e, pela primavera falava-se que os preços da uva iriam baixar muito devido ao bom nível de stocks do comércio a à redução das vendas devido ao covid. Afirmava-se que o comércio iria comprar as uvas quase "por favor" à produção.
Afinal, com a chegada da vindima, os piores cenários não se vieram a verificar. A fraca nascença acabou por equilibrar a oferta e a procura e, no final o comércio acabou por não reduzir as compras como se perspectivava no pior cenário.
Em relação à qualidade das uvas e dos mostos produzidos, no caso da Noble & Murat, as vinhas velhas brilharam este ano. A redução na produção trouxe para os lagares mostos muito concentrados, com uma côr retinta e com um rácio de casca e engaço muito alto para a polpa. Os baumés (teor de açúcar) dos mostos foram altos graças a um ligeiro empassamento ocorrido na primeira metade de Setembro mas, no nosso caso, sem grande sacrifício do pH.
No compto geral, vamos acompanhar com expectativa a evolução destes vinhos nos próximos anos sendo que, o nosso objectivo de ter um leque de massas vínicas de um patamar de qualidade superior para manter a consistência do nosso LBV, parace ter sido alcançado.".
