Churchill's Dry White Port

 EN/PT

What's so special about this dry white Port wine?

Make no mistake, white and dry white Ports are not all the same...

This is a wine which is already a classic that distinguishes itself in this style of Port, over the years it has become an unavoidable reference in dry white Port wines.

But let's us go back briefly to Churchill's past. When John Graham, together with his brothers Anthony and William, founded Churchill's in 1981, with the aim of producing their own special categories superior quality traditional-style Port wines, the first Port wine produced was Churchill's Dry White, that accompanies the house throughout these last 40 years.

(the complete report about Churchill's here: Churchills and Quinta da Gricha)

In the first years and until the company got its own vineyards, later in 1999, with the acquisition of Quinta da Gricha, John Graham reached an agreement with Jorge Borges de Sousa, a producer and owner of several quintas in the Douro in privileged locations in the Cima Corgo sub-region, Pinhão valley and in the Douro. This agreement allowed John Graham in each harvest the selection of the best grapes and wines, from the different Borges de Sousa's properties, which at the time also had an appreciable and enviable stock of Port wines kept in cellar. In the words of John Graham:"he gave me the possibility to choose the best of his wines" and "the possibility to buy the initial stock".

This was the basis of Churchill's wines for 20 years, which was fundamental for the company to start to be recognized for the quality of the Port wines it produced.

The first wine produced by Churchill's was the Dry White Port, which had its own distinctive drier style with the purpose of giving dignity to the Douro white grape varieties, a wine with about 10 years of ageing in wood, at a time when most Port houses were mainly betting on white Port wines whit a younger style.

Years later, in 2016, Churchill's Dry White Port was rated as excellent with a score of 91pts. by the internationally recognized north american magazine Wine Advocate.

Made exclusively from letter "A" grapes (according to the Douro classification system for vineyards that produce grapes for Port wine) that are selected from high-altitude old vineyards in the Cima Corgo sub-region and the blend is made up of the following grape varieties: Malvasia-fina, the predominant variety and the wine's structure (50%), then Rabigato, Códega do Larinho and Viosinho.

The vinification methods are traditional, with foot treading of the grapes in the old granite "lagares", in this case, in the small granite lagares called "lagaretas" that exist at Quinta da Gricha with a capacity of around 2000kg (the old larger Quinta da Gricha lagares, built on 1852, have a capacity between 6000 and 7000kg.), the whole bunches are used without destemming, with minimal intervention and using the natural yeasts that come from the grapes. Fermentation and maceration takes place with the grape skins, essential for the wine structure and balance, and is not as long as with red Port wines. This process makes the wine drier and at the same time extracts more natural alcohol from the grape itself, and so to a smaller addition of wine spirit at the time of fortification.

It is then aged in old used casks for approximately 10 years in the Churchill's Port wine cellar on rua da Fonte Nova in the Vila Nova de Gaia historic center.

My dry white Port, some tasting notes

The wine was bottled in 2021. It has an intense, rich and bright golden color that reflects the years of ageing. In fact, the color tells us what the label does not refer, the oxidative evolution of almost ten years of wood ageing. At the beginning of the 90's the house opted for an elegant transparent bottle to enhance the beautiful natural golden color of the wine.

It has a good intensity on the nose, not too excessive, with floral aromas and predominant notes of orange blossom, dried fruits and then some lighter notes of spices. On the palate it's smooth, also a consequenece of the ageing period in wood, it has good acidity and freshness, harmonious and of medium complexity, despite beeing a dry Port wine, the residual sugar is perceptible and pleasant. With flavors of candied orange peel, citrus fruits, dried apricot and some bitter orange marmalade and then light notes of spicies. It has a long finish.

It's the perfect aperitif, simple, on its own, served fresh... (a waste mixing it with tonic water). The temperature is fundamental, it shoud be served cool, around 8ºC.

According to the producer it is the best-selling Port wine at Churchill's visitor center in Vila Nova de Gaia.

This is one of the last bottlings with the old bottle labels, since this year, after celebrating 40 years since its foundation in 1981, Churchill's presents a new image for its wines, in an aesthetic reformulation of the labels and bottle models for its entire wine portfolio.

Churchill's Dry White Port
