The 2015 Vintage Port

EN/PT

    2015, a prodigal year that gave birth to exceptional Vintages, which we have already noticed here (see: 2015 a classic vintage port?).
    Nevertheless although a year with all the necessary conditions that made predict a classic Vintage Port year and a generalized consensus of the producing Houses, this did not happen after all. This year will laways be marked by this resolution difficult to perceive, especially by the weight of the decisions of the major groups in the sector (Sogevinus, Sogrape, Symington Family Estates and Fladgate Partnership) although other medium and small producers presented many of their Vintages with their main brands (as a classic Vintage declaration) and not as a Single Quinta Vintage Port, a proof of the exceptional quality recognition of the Vintage Port produced.

    There are also some first editions to be highlighted, such as the Port Vintages, "Mapa", "Noble & Murat" and "Proibido", always welcome to the attentive enthusiasts who accompany the world of Port wine news.
     Still a reference to the Vintages "Barão de Vilar" and "Maynard's", who presented for the first time organic Port Vintages, made from organic grapes and with organic spirit used in the fortification process (it is intended to better preserve the wine aromas).

O Porto Vintage 2015

Noble & Murat

EN/PT

An historical Port wine brand reborn,
back to business.

    A Port wine export company founded in 1831, one of the export companies that marked the Port wine history wiht great activity until the end of the XIX century. (in "Illustrated Port Wine Dictionary", by Manuel Pintão and Carlos Cabral).

    The Noble & Murat reborn, an old historical Port wine brand, now acquired by the partners Alexandre Antas Botelho and António Borges Taveira, which just began its activity in June 2012.
    In fact, it's only apparently that can be called the most recent Port wine company in the sector, since both partners of Noble & Murat, Lda., are descendants of families long associated with this activity, with old records in the export and shipment of Douro wines through the river Douro dating back to the 16th century. Both families participated in some of the best wines that most prestigious Port wine companies bottled until 2004, the year in which the supply ended and when a decision was required, on the end of the activity, with which they had always been profoundly related, or find a solution to preserve and keep this rich heritage.

    Thus, in 2012, once the difficult legal requirements for the production of Port wine have been overcome, including the existence and maintenance of a considerable minimum stock (of 150,000 liters or aprx. 300 wine casks), which is always a major obstacle to starting the activity, made the good decision to initiate this new project, focused exclusively on the production of high quality Port wines, keeping alive a vast heritage of knowledge and experience and the long family tradition handed down from generation to generation.
    For this purpose, Noble & Murat, with its winery located in Celeirós do Douro, Sabrosa, does not seek to value a particular property or a particular vineyard, but rather a selected set of 6 very old vineyard plots, some century old vineyards with the best locations in the Pinhão area (sub region of Cima Corgo), some of which are located in Vale de Mendiz and Vale do Tedo, which in turn are the origin of the grapes that are traditionally vinified and foot trodden in granit lagares with a high ratio man per cask in the winery (with a minimum of two persons per cask of wine), which is already a rarity these days worthy of mention. The choice of the right vineyards, the careful selection of the grapes and the precision of the individualized vinification processes are characteristics that identify and define this Port wine House.
The vineyards
    The uniqueness of this project is also due to the winemaking process, which is unique and always determined for Port wine production of vintage quality, from the choice and selection of the grapes to the vinification techniques adopted and practiced. If the year is unmistakably a "vintage year", after the declaration, a part of the wine produced is bottled as vintage Port. The remaining wine is bottled as the L.B.V. Port (Late Bottled Vintage) of the House, which also happens in those years in which there is no vintage declaration. That is to say that the Noble & Murat LBV Port is literally a vintage Port, bottled two years latter.

    At this initial stage of the company, the next problem was the brand choice to identify the wines that were to be produced. Until then, the wines produced by the families of both partners were bottled with the brands of the companies they supplied. However, a brand was needed that reflected the image and the effective quality and credibility that their wines enjoyed in the sector. Thus, the opportunity arose to revine "Noble & Murat", one of the Port wine historic companies.

    The company aims to reach out to the expert connoisseur and the current N & M portfolio already has the Noble & Murat LBV Porto 2012, a traditional style LBV, unfiltered, serious, reminiscent of a vintage Port, along with the best ones produced in this category of Port wine.
    Very soon the Noble & Murat vintage Port 2015 (6,600 bottles), will be available, very well considered by the specialized critics and wine publications, with very good rankings among several recognized vintage Ports produced by other main firms (it will be available in the portuguese market at the end of November 2017). In Noble & Murat future plans is also the production of a 20 year old Tawny Port and a Ruby Reserve.
    The export markets are obviously a destination for these wines, to France, U.S.A., Luxembourg and Denmark.

    For a convenient presentation, let us now travel briefly through the long history of this brand, closely following the description of António Barros Cardoso, in his book "Baco & Hermes". Firstly the curiosity of being attributed to one of the partners of this company the oldest reference to the use of the term "Late Bottled Vintage", which reinforces the affinity with this new project, since the Noble & Murat LBV is intended to be a reference in this style of Port wine.

    Noble & Murat was a pioneer firm in the Port trade as one of the first english companies in the sector. "This firm had its origins in the activity of one of the oldest english merchants that settled in the city of Porto around the wine business. It was Timothy Harris, whose presence in the city dates back to the end of the XVII century.".

    Timothy Harris, who was one of the pioneers in the Port wine trade (1698), declared wines in the Porto "Imposition", from 1700 to 1713, of which he exported an annual average of 669,5 wine casks. The remaining founding partners of this firm, who were succeeding those who were leaving the company, are also among the most active traders of their time, as can be seen by the average number of casks declared in their names in the "Imposition" and the years to which these records refer: Joseph Murat in the period from 1719 to 1731 has registered an annual average of 202 casks and whose offspring remained, since its entry, linked to the destinations of the firm until its dissolution. William Harris who, in the period from 1720 to 1728, presented an annual average of 861 casks; John Page who presented in the period from 1729 to 1756, an annual average of 445 casks; Birquid Pratt that in the period from 1730 to 1735 negotiated an annual average of 677 casks.

    We cannot fail to mention the name of Charles Henry Noble, a prominent figure in the trade and in the city of Porto, whose name was an integral part of the company's name from its entry into the firm. He was arrested , tried and deported for having encouraged the revolt in Porto against the absolutists, which was shown to be an act of courage that could have cost him his life, when friends toasted his health said of him "Noble by name and noble by nature".

    The company shares its origins and some of the partners who have integrated it with other Port wine historic companies such as Quarles Harris through Timothy and William Harris, Velloso & Tait o Stormonth & Tait. Its founders and its various members, who formed part of its corporate designation played prominent roles in the Porto english community, as well as in the town itself, having family ties with some of the historical families of the sector, such as the Warre's and the Tait's.

    We can have a good idea of the members succession through the changes that have taken place in the social denomination:
  • Started as  "Timothy Harris", from 1700 to 1713;
  • The business name changed in 1723 to "Harris, Page & Pratt";
  • "Page & Pratt", in 1729;
  • "John Page", in 1730;
  • "John Page & Son", in 1754;
  • "John & Charles Page & Co.", in 1760;
  • "Page, Campion & Co.", in 1761;
  • "Charles Page", in 1771;
  • "Page & Co.", in 1800;
  • "Page, Noble & Co.", in 1802;
  • Having adopted the designation "C H Noble & Murat", in 1831.
    (in "Oporto Old and New", by Charles Sellers, 1899).

    "C H Noble & Murat" had a considerable size having a vast worldwide business network and, like all british firms of the time, the so called "old guard", it was a generalist company (a general trader): no doubt that the main product exported was wine, however, there were also many other products that constituted its commercial activity, such as oranges and salt, and imported dried codfish (form England or Newfoundland, in present day Canada), textiles, iron and glass, only later and due to the historical and political changes and also the trade itself, began to specialize and began to focus exclusively on Port wine.".

    To another of the members of this firm, Geofrey Murat Tait, great great grandson of Joseph Murat, is attributed one of the first references made to what was at the time a still unknown style of Port wine, the Late Bottled Vintage or L.B.V. Port.
    It is also worth mentioning, that this firm had strong commercial interests in Newfoundland, having one of its basic trade product, the import of codfish from this region, being one of the leading companies in the trade of this product, competing with the rival company "Hunt, Roope & Co.", being mentioned by the partners of this firm as "The Neighbours".

Noble & Murat

(in "Diccionário Ilustrado do Vinho do Porto", de Manuel Pintão e Carlos Cabral).

Noble & Murat Porto LBV 2012

XVII."

    Timothy Harris, que foi um dos pioneiros no trato do vinho do Porto (1698), manifestou vinhos na "Imposição" do Porto no período de 1700 a 1713, dos quais exportou uma média anual de 669,5 pipas. Os restantes sócios fundadores, que se foram sucedendo aos que iam deixando a firma, contam-se também entre os mais activos comerciantes do seu tempo, como se pode verificar pela média de pipas manifestadas nos seus nomes na "Imposição" e os anos a que esses registos se reportam: Joseph Murat, que no período de 1719 a 1731 deixou registada uma média anual de 202 pipas e cuja descendência ficou, desde a sua entrada, ligada aos destinos da firma, até à sua dissolução. William Harris que, no período de 1720 a 1728, apresentou uma média anual de 861 pipas; John Page que apresentou, no período de 1729 a 1756, uma média anual de 445 pipas; Birquid Pratt que, no período de 1730 a 1735, negociou uma média anual de 677 pipas.

    Não podemos ainda deixar de referir o nome de Charles Henry Noble, uma figura com destaque no comércio e na cidade do Porto e, cujo nome foi parte integrante da denominação da firma a partir da sua entrada na sociedade. Ele foi preso, julgado e deportado por ter incentivado à revolta contra os absolutistas no Porto, o que ficou demonstrado como sendo um acto de coragem que lhe podia ter custado a vida, os amigos brindavam à sua saúde dizendo a seu respeito "Noble by name and noble by nature.".

    Esta firma partilha também as suas origens e alguns dos sócios que a integraram, com outras ilustres marcas de vinho do Porto, como a Quarles Harris, através de William e Timothy Harris, a Velloso & Tait ou a Stormonth & Tait. Os seus fundadores e os vários sócios que a constituíram e que fizeram parte da sua razão social, ocuparam papéis de destaque na comunidade britânica da cidade, assim como na própria praça portuense, tendo ligações familiares com algumas famílias históricas do sector, como os Warre e os Tait.

    Podemos ter uma boa imagem da sucessão de sócios, através da sucessivas alterações na denominação social, ao longo da história da firma:

  • Começou como "Timothy Harris", de 1700 a 1713;
  • Em 1723, a razão social mudou para "Harris, Page & Pratt";
  • "Page & Pratt", em 1729;
  • "John Page" em 1730;
  • "John Page & Son", em 1754;
  • "John & Charles Page & Co.", em 1760;
  • "Page, Campion & Co.", em 1761;
  • "Charles Page" em 1771;
  • "Page & Co." em 1800;
  • "Page, Noble & Co.", em 1802;
  • Tendo adoptado a denominação "C H Noble & Murat" em 1831.
    (in "Oporto Old & New", by Charles Sellers, 1899).

2015, a classic vintage Port?

    To declare or not to declare...

Churchill´s lodge, Entreposto de Vila Nova de Gaia
    Four years after the last classic vintage Port declaration (2011), until now the only one this decade, and two years after the 2015 harvest, in the middle of the 2017 spring, a time of tasting samples and evaluating wines, when the Port producing houses make great decisions about the Port wines of the 2015 harvest, that is, the decision to declare or not to declare 2015 vintage Port.

    It seems that this subject has already been more consensual and that by recent news, there may not be a widespread and extended consensus regarding the year 2015. We know that Niepoort already took the decision to declare 2015, as well as Cockburn's, that annouced today its 2015 bicentenary vintage (1815-2015), which is the second vintage since the company was acquired by the Symington family in 2010, however we are still awaiting for the determinant decisions of other important names of the sector, to be taken this days.

    There are vintage Ports produced almost every year, what then is necessary for a given vintage declaration to be considered a classic declaration or a classic vintage Port year?

    It is only considered a classic vintage, the harvest of a given year, when the vast majority of the producers declare the production and bottling of a vintage Port wine and with the main brands of each house. These are years where there is a widespread and extended consensus between the majority of the producers.

    After the producer's decision and the approval of the IVDP (The Douro and Port Wine Institute), which recognizes the exceptional quality required for Port wines of this special category, the vintage proclamation is made by the Port Wine Brotherhood(*) and this happens when more than 50 per cent of the companies that integrate it, declare a vintage Port.

(*)The Port Wine Brotherhod, or "Confraria do Vinho do Porto", brings together "persons and entities who, through their activity in the Port wine production and export, as well as, by their action, reputation and services in favor of Port wine, contribute to the knowledge and prestige of its image", and has the statutory purpose of communicating, promoting and reinforcing the worldwide reputation of Port wine.

Douro: the 2015 harvest report

(Quinta da Costa de Baixo, Upper Corgo sub-region    © HSM archives)

    Completed the recent harvest, the annual cycle of the vineyard in the Douro region is over. Let us consider the main characteristics of the wine year and the influence of the vagaries of nature and climate throughout the year.
We can begin by stating that, in general, it was an atypical year, let's look at the following summary:

The winter was cold and dry.

The spring was warmer and drier than usual for this time of year in this region. The months of April, May and June were even unusually warm and together with the high temperatures registered there was also a lack of water and it was precisely in the spring that the effects of the lack of rain were felt.

Indeed, the first major feature of this wine year was the drought, the permanent and severe water shortage that was, of course, a constant concern.
The consequence of these natural factors in the vineyards was the anticipation of the vineyard cycle, which started earlier than usual, flowering occurred in May and the “painter” (“veraison” or coloring) arrived in July.

Some producers harvest reports enhance the schist soils formations and its water retention capacity of the few winter rains and also the adaptability of indigenous Douro grape varieties, which turned out to prevent dehydration and even, as we shall see, to determine the balanced ripening of the grapes.
In addition to the vineyard ability to stay hydrated in these difficult conditions, we also have to consider  the cooler weather and cooler temperatures during maturation, which prevented the water stress of the vines.

Then, in summer, remained the lack of water. During July and August, temperatures were less warm, and cooler than is the norm in this region at this time of year, with cooler nights, which contributed to the maturation balance and uniformity of maturation and to the natural acidity of the grapes.

There was a precocious maturation and in many cases the harvest was anticipated. At the beginning of the harvest the grapes had great looks and were in very good condition and a clear quality good balance between the level of sugar and acidity, with the ideal conditions at this late maturing cycle. All at this stage pointing to a good harvest.

Then in full harvest, there was the critical moment, with heavy rains on 15 and 16 September. After long and widespread drought, vines, thirsty, immediately absorbed rain water with consequent dilution of the grapes.

It was the time of big decisions and the harvest interruption for a few days was the right one and also the most risky considering the uncertainty of the weather and the return of rain. However, these standby days enabled the disappearance of the effects of the diluting of the grapes.

Resuming the harvest, it was found that the interruption offset the risk assumed, since the rain eventually help balance the ripening of the grapes which were in excellent health condition and the maturation was more regular, which also led to a general quality improvement.

We recall also that the previous two vintages, 2013 and 2014 that were very affected by the rain.

Entered in October, appeared the first autumn rains.

In conclusion, the analysis of the various registers of producers and harvest reports, despite the widespread drought, weather conditions, especially in the summer and until the beginning of the harvest, did not harm the vines and grapes that endured the heat, but had effects in the production levels, which were lower compared to the average of the Douro, that is already low (approximate and not definitive figures represented a reduction of 10%), which in some specific situations represented a reduction of over 40%.

It was also a year in which the conditions turned out to be favorable to a homogeneous vegetative growth of the grapes and a very high average quality balanced wines with lots of color and firm tannins.

Between producers the enthusiasm is great. Niepoort is convinced that 2015 will be a better year than 2011 for Port wines and the DOC Douro. Graham's refers to an "exceptional" year. Some critics follow, speaking of an excellent year.

If in 2014 we concluded the report mentioning that it was not a year for classic vintage statements, in 2015 we can say that will be a year of great wines and in all likelihood will be a year of classic vintages. For confirmation we can only wait by the spring of 2017.
