Testimonies that reflect the personal experience and difficulties of Douro producers and those in the field, are always indispensable and very interesting to help us better understand the viticultural year that is now ending. We publish now the testimony of Alexandre Antas Botelho, a traditional Douro producer (Director of "Porto dos Santos" and partner of "Noble & Murat"):
"This year 2022 was a little complex. "dos Santos" balance was good and this year's wines have a good quality and promise solid foundations for excellent LBV's, but the year required difficult decisions from technicians and it is natural that the quality variations reflect this.
In my case, I always prefer to vinify early, in order to preserve the balance and natural acidity of the grapes, factors that are critical for my style of Port wine and for the final quality of the product (these are objective decision-making criteria and risk control).
Regarding the year itself, 2022 was a very dry year, which brought many problems of lack of water (all the native water sources in my village dried up, if it was back in the old days, then there would be nothing to drink or to cook with!!). Of course, this factor was reflected in the grapes and in the wine. I don't remember having so little pulp in the grapes, a treader had a lot more work to transform the grape bunches into must, the yields (kg./L) were naturally lower. The lack of water also brought other challenges, such as imbalances in grape maturations and low pH for those who harvested before the rain in the middle of the harvest. Those who waited for the rain to harvest will have had good results, as long as the vines have managed to withstand the dryness of the year. I believe that Baumés and higher pH's were possible.
As a balance of the year, I would say that it was a year in which ther will be a little of everything, the decisions of each team and the exposure to warmer areas will greatly influence the final product of each brand, but I'am sure that there were very good musts this year.
This year, the issue of climate change was critical, for me and for other producers inserted in the local society, the lack of water was very worrying, which meant that all the traditional kitchen gardens had to be abandoned and large patches of adult vines died in the lower areas, as I had the opportunity to see in Donelo, Gouvinhas and Covelinhas (how would it be possible to survive 150 years ago?).".

Douro, a vindima 2022, um testemunho em primeira mão

São sempre indispensáveis e muito interessantes os testemunhos que reflectem a experiência pessoal e as dificuldades dos produtores e de quem está no terreno, para nos ajudar a compreender um pouco melhor o ano vitícola que agora termina. Publicamos o testemunho pessoal de Alexandre Antas Botelho, um produtor tradicional do Douro (Director "Porto dos Santos" e Sócio da "Noble & Murat"):
"Este ano de 2022 foi um pouco complexo. O balanço da "dos Santos" foi bom e os vinhos deste ano têm boa qualidade e prometem bases sólidas para excelentes LBV's, mas o ano exigiu dos técnicos decisões difíceis e é natural que as variações de qualidade reflitam isso mesmo.
No meu caso, prefiro sempre vinificar sobre o cedo, de modo a preservar o equilíbrio e a acidez natural das uvas, factores que são críticos para os meus estilos de Porto e para a qualidade final do produto (tratam-se de critérios objectivos de tomada de decisão e controlo de risco).
Em relação ao ano em si, 2022 foi um ano muito seco, que trouxe muitos problemas de falta de água (todas as fontes nativas de água da minha aldeia secaram, se fosse antigamente não haveria o que beber nem com o que cozinhar!!). Claro que este factor se reflectiu nas uvas e no vinho, não me lembro de ter tão pouca polpa nas uvas, um pisador teve muito mais trabalho para transformar os cachos em mosto e os rendimentos (Kg/L) foram naturalmente mais baixos. A falta da água trouxe também outros desafios, como desequilíbrios na maturação e pH's baixos para quem colheu antes das chuvas do meio da vindima. Quem esperou pela chuva para fazer a colheita terá obtido bons resultados, contando sempre que as videiras tenham conseguido resistir à secura do ano, nesses casos acredito que tenha sido possível Baumés e pH's mais altos.
Como balanço do ano, diria que é um ano em que haverá de tudo, as decisões de cada equipa e a exposição a zonas mais quentes irão influenciar muito o produto final de cada marca, mas tenho a certeza que há muito bons mostos este ano.
Este ano a questão das alterações climáticas foi crítica, para mim e para outros produtores inseridos na sociedade local, foi muito preocupante a falta da água, que fez com que tivessem que abandonar todas as hortas da minha aldeia e a que manchas grandes de vinha adulta morressem nas zonas mais baixas, como tive a oportunidade de vêr em Donelo, Gouvinhas e Covelinhas (como é que seria possível sobreviver há 150 anos atrás?).".
